NYC Museums: Museum of Modern Art

The Museum of Modern Art, often simply called MoMA, is not only one of the most celebrated of New York City’s many great museums, but is also considered to be one of the most influential modern art museums in the world. MoMA holds an extensive collection of all kinds of modern and contemporary artwork, with everything from pieces on architecture and design, to paintings and sculptures, to film and electronic media, and much more. The museum also holds a library and archives containing over 300,000 entries, including primary source material highlighting the history of modern art. MoMA even features fine dining in its award-winning restaurant, The Modern.

The Museum of Modern Art is located in Midtown Manhattan, just a few blocks south of Central Park, between 5th and 6th Avenues. If you’re looking for other museums in Manhattan that offer more than just modern art, there are plenty of other museums located very nearby. Right next door is the American Folk Art Museum, which houses one of the largest collections of folk art in the country. The whole area around the museum is easily accessible by public transportation, with three different stations within three blocks, serviced by five different subway lines.

The building on 53rd street that houses this New York museum was remodeled in 2004 and now holds nearly twice as much space for exhibitions than before the renovation. Inside visitors can find over 150,000 works of art, and about 22,000 films and film stills. Among MoMA’s collection of Western masterpieces are Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night and Salvador Dali’s the Persistence of Memory, in addition to many works by other greats such as Pablo Picaso, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, and Andy Warhol. In addition to its extensive collection, the museum also hosts rotating exhibitions through the year.
